YNW Melly Gets a Break as Witness Tampering Allegations Are Dropped
YNW Melly has achieved a significant legal victory as prosecutors in Florida have dropped witness tampering charges against him just before his trial was set to begin.
The rapper known for "Murder On My Mind" was scheduled to face trial on these state charges, with jury selection planned for Wednesday. However, he can now focus on his upcoming double-murder trial.
Melly's attorneys, Drew Findling and Carey Haughwout, informed TMZ, "On behalf of Jamell Demons, we are pleased with the dismissal of the alleged tampering and gang-related charges in court this morning. As his newly appointed legal team, it quickly became clear to us that no crimes had taken place. Unfortunately, for 652 days while these charges were pending, the State did not come to the same conclusion until just before the trial."
It remains unclear why the charges were dropped, as prosecutors had claimed that Melly was conspiring with his co-defendant Cortlen Henry and another inmate to stop Melly's ex from testifying in the double-murder case.
With the tampering charges now resolved, Melly's attorneys have stated that they will work to secure his release from a Broward County, Florida jail while he awaits his double-murder trial.
Melly is accused of killing two of his childhood friends in a drive-by shooting that occurred in October 2018. He faced trial in 2023, but the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision, resulting in a mistrial.
The retrial for Melly's double-murder case is scheduled for January 2027, and the implications are serious, as he could potentially face the death penalty if found guilty.
